When we built set logging, the question was whether a warm up set should add to the day's volume. The short answer is no. The long answer is this note.
The problem of inflated volume
Training volume is weight times reps. If you count the warm up, two people doing exactly the same hard work end up with different numbers depending on how much they warm up. The number stops comparing anything.
A number that goes up because you warmed up more does not tell you whether you trained better.
And the one for records
It is even worse with personal bests. If the app looks at every set to work out your best estimated 1RM, a loose set of twenty reps with little weight can give a higher estimate than your good set.
That is why there is a single gate in the code that decides whether a set counts, and warm up sets do not go through it. How to mark them is in Warm up sets.
The trade off is that you have to mark them. Tapping the set number changes its type, with no menus or screens: it is the thing you tap most in the middle of a session.
